HeritageSan Antonio's amateur golf heritage dates back to 1913 and has crowned past champions still competing in 2004. Octogenarian Al Sturchio (1960 Men’s) leads the list of area golfers dedicated to maintaining San Antonio's rich amateur tradition.
Golf San Antonio currently manages six City Amateur Championships that include The Greater San Antonio Men’s Amateur Championship, Matchplay Championship, Senior Men’s Amateur Championship, Women’s Amateur Championship, Junior Championship and the Junior Match Play Championship. Our players have progressed through our junior competitions to senior championships to receive local, state, national, and international recognition.
Multiple winners such as Loraine Young (Men’s 1935, 1939, 1940, 1943), Adolph Trevino (Men’s Senior 1995, 96, 97, 99) set today's longevity and performance standards for current champions such as Alan Hill (Men’s 1998, 99, 2002, 03, 04). Joe Conrad (Men’s 1950, 56) received international recognition with his 1955 British Amateur victory, while other winners Frank Conner (Men’s 1970) competed on the PGA and Senior PGA Tours and Anthony Rodriguez (Junior 1990 and Men’s 1994, 95) competed on the PGA Tour. National recognition for Bruce Hooper (Junior 1962) was achieved with a victory in the 2004 National Blind Golfers Championship.
The pace for our women golfers was set by Sherry Gladwin (Junior Girls 1959, 60, 61, 62, 63) and Susan Yantis (1976, 77, 79). All-American status was achieved by Wendy Ward (Junior Girls 1987,88), Holly Carriker (Junior Girls1991, 92) and Christi Cano (1997, 98). Wendy is a multiple LPGA tour champion and has represented the United States in the Solheim Cup. |
